Crabtree & Evelyn
A nationwide retail chain, the shop’s primary features are extensive oak cabinetry and oak hardwood floors. In the humid climate of Galveston, however, a hardwood floor could not be directly installed. Holliday Builders raised the elevation of the shop to build out the interior consistent with other Crabtree and Evelyn shops.

The interior build-out of a 5,000 square foot branch demanded a six-week construction schedule. By the time all of the final decisions and approvals were made, only four and a half weeks remained for construction. Holliday Builders lived up to their reputation for timeliness by constructing three teller locations, two offices and a drive through bank and installing a security system by the original deadline.

Holliday Builders worked extensively with the systems management group of Merrill Lynch to convert existing office space into a computer data center. The special features required for this application included heavy security protection, emergency shut down systems and riot-proof glass. An electrical link was also provided between the Denver Data Center and the home office in New York.

Maggie’s
Located on Galveston’s historic Strand, Maggie’s is a gift and potpourri shop inside the Sealy Building. The Sealy Building itself has been renovated and remodeled in a Gothic warehouse style. The exposed, twelve-foot ceiling is painted white, and the flooring is black and white tile. This modern look is offset by the renovated elevator which sits in the middle of the lobby, and thick, white Roman-style pillars which extend from floor to ceiling.
The shop walls are nine feet tall with arches over the doorways. Inside, the shop has shorter partitioning walls creating several small display areas. The outer walls consist of a long series of bay windows which add to the separate room affect for displaying merchandise.

In an attempt to steer away from tradition but still use classic elements, this space was designed with post-modern architecture. Black marble flooring with carpet inserts and trim appear in corridors and the reception area. The theme of long, narrow focal points is carried out in several columns made of Honduras mahogany. A curved counter with vane glass accents the reception area. A sculptured casing for indirect lighting runs throughout. Holliday Builders takes particular pride in the beautiful mahogany millwork in this lease space.

Holliday Builders built out a 30,000-square-foot regional office covering two floors of the Premier Building. The lower floor houses nine offices, five work stations, a conference room, lounge, meeting room and audio/visual center. The upper floor consists of 35 offices, 35 work stations, a lounge and a stock trading room. The interior of the lower floor was built out with Honduras mahogany and partitions with acoustic sound covering and mahogany caps. More simple formica and metal frames were used for the upper floor interior. On this, as with all Merrill Lynch projects, Holliday Builders was required to coordinate activities and schedules with the contractor for the shell building.

Anne Stuart’s
Located in the Sealy Building, the walls of this clothing shop replicate the bay windows of the other retail shops, including an arch above the doorway. Inside, however, it boasts an entirely different personality. Built on two levels, this shop has a very conservative, New England wood interior with forest green sisal and brass accents. The mahogany millwork is built in a series of cubicles designed in varying sizes—long areas for skirts, shelves for sweaters, and so on. Behind the front counter, the free-standing partition wall accents the wood interior of the shop beautifully with back lighting illuminating the etched glass running along the top of the wall. The wall was taken from a historic building in Dallas, transferred to Galveston and restored by Holliday Builders.

The beauty of this 25,000-square-foot lease space lies in the extensive mahogany millwork throughout. All walkways and entrance areas are ribbon-grained mahogany with a block panel look. Holliday Builders introduced the use of Avenite, a synthetic, high-tech finish for millwork which has the look of marble, but is malleable and easy to work with. Avenite was used in the reception area and executive office suites. The area also includes a conference room with a parquet floor installed in a herringbone pattern, a wire/operations room, lounge and board room. Suede wall coverings used in selected areas accent the mauve and azure wall coverings used elsewhere. The entire area totals 38 perimeter offices and 41 work stations. The most aesthetic aspect of the area is the walnut doors with 10 panels of glass and side lights which lead into the conference room.
A scheduling challenge arose when negotiations for the lease space cut into construction time, leaving only two months to complete a four month project. Holliday Builders met the deadline and delivered a plush, finely executed interior.

Paine Webber/Oklahoma City
Holliday Builders built out the interior of this 5,000-square-foot space in Renaissance Towers to house the offices of Paine Webber. The conference room boasts marble flooring with carpet inserts. A marble entry way is accented by indirect lighting throughout the reception area. The partitioning walls which appear throughout are covered with acoustic materials and capped in walnut; many contain planters trimmed in walnut. A wall covering of vinyl which emulates Mayan stucco appears throughout the nine offices. Additional rooms include a wire/operations room, storage area, lounge and mechanical room.
